Tyler Smith Headshot

Tyler Smith grew up in Albert City, Iowa. He met his wife, Grace, in high school. Tyler played football for Simpson College. They have two kids, Leo and Ruthie. Tyler enjoys playing golf, watching college sports, and eating good food with his family. We also love to visit Okoboji in the summer.

Tyler is a partner at Peddicord Wharton, LLP, in West Des Moines, where he is a civil trial attorney.

Julian Dismute was raised in Iowa. In 2016, Julian obtained his Associates Degree in Psychology at the University of Phoenix. He is also a Certified leadership coach through Grandview University. He is currently working full time for Fellowship of Christian Athletes serving the Des Moines Public Schools.

Julian is very involved in the leadership of men at Hope-Elim Church, leading a weekly men’s study.

Driven by his passion for making a positive impact, James continues to explore new opportunities in various industries, building organizations oriented around great people.

Alongside his professional pursuits, James is a dedicated husband and father to Carly and four young children. His strong sense of community extends to his faith, where he volunteers as a musician and Life Group leader at his church. James' approach to spirituality is characterized by his willingness to ask awkward questions, fostering a sense of community built on shared curiosity and the desire to live a fulfilling life.

Kim Smith - CC Board Member

Kim L. Smith grew up in the Des Moines area and has practiced law in West Des Moines for over 30 years. He also spent over 5 years with an international CPA firm. He is President of K. L. Smith, P.C., a successful law firm that handles tax planning and compliance, estate planning and documentation, and helps small businesses in planning and organization.

He and his wife, Carol, enjoy time with their 2 children and 3 grandchildren, who all live nearby. They also assist their parents, who also live in the area.

Kim is on the Board of Hope Ministries. He volunteers on the worship team at church also sharing his love of singing with local assisted living centers. He also enjoys playing tennis.

Please be aware that Leaders in our program are NOT allowed to use marijuana recreationally. Therefore, we ask that your Ally involvement with Leaders or other Allies does not involve the use of marijuana. Additionally, some of our Leaders and Allies may have struggled with alcohol moderation in the past. We ask that you be sensitive to the struggles of others when engaging in activities with fellow program participants.
In order for me to participate as a volunteer with Change Course, after due consideration of my age, health, physical condition and ability, and any inherent risk and personal risks involved in Change Course activities, I voluntarily agree to assume all risks of loss that arise out of my participation and agree to waive any and all claims against Change Course and the other parties described below.I realize that working with Change Course may involve risks and hazards, including but not limited to the risk of injury, to me. I am aware of the risks and hazards inherent in my participation in Change Course and do hereby assume sole responsibility for all such risks and waive all claims against Change Course and their respective agents, representatives, officers, employees, successors, assigns, and insurers. I agree that I will abide by the rules of Change Course while participating as a volunteer.
Occasionally photos and videos are taken of Change Course activities and participants to show others what the organization is like. I hereby give Change Course permission to use such images of myself in activities for public relations, marketing, and other purpose.
To the best of my knowledge and barring unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances, I commit to doing my absolute best to attend all every Monday night Family Gatherings from 6:00pm - 8:00pm, whether onsite or via Zoom Call. I understand that if my attendance falls below 80% OR I miss 3 consecutive Family Gatherings, it will negatively impact my small group, and I may be asked to leave the Ally program.
By completing this application, I understand that I give Change Course the right to review my completed background check, should I decide to complete the background link sent to me by Change Course.
I understand that completion of this application and the ensuing background check DOES NOT guarantee entry into the Change Course Ally Program, and I agree to abide by Change Course's final decision regarding whether the Ally Program is the best fit for me at this time.

Tom Budler retired from the Berkshire Hathaway Energy Company family of businesses in February 2022 after 35 years of service. Tom worked for MidAmerican Energy Company for 25 of those years in various capacities including generation construction and operations, gas and electric operations, and wind generation development, construction, and operations. In 2012 Tom transitioned to BHE Renewables, LLC where he was responsible for growing its nationwide wind generation portfolio. In 2015 he also assumed additional responsibility to initiate, grow and manage BHE Renewables’ tax equity investment portfolio.

Tom has been married to his wife Cindy for 25 wonderful years and they reside in Norwalk, Iowa. He is a member of Valley Evangelical Free Church and volunteers regularly with the Hand-In-Hand Special Needs Ministry and the Valley Disaster Relief team.

Board Members Jerry and Nancy Foster

Jerry and Nancy Foster have been married for 44 years and reside in Des Moines, Iowa. They have four children and numerous grandchildren.

Jerry is the founder of Foster Group, which is a wealth management firm, serving over 1,500 families and organizations. He is also the author of LifeFocus; Achieving a Life of Purpose and Influence. Nancy has dedicated her life to pouring into her family and mentoring women all over the world.

Together, Jerry and Nancy spoke with FamilyLife marriage conferences for over 22 years. They’ve also been involved in the development of a sustainable economic and personal development model in El Rosario, Guatemala with several other couples. They are passionate about helping change the paradigm for others and creating sustainable life change.

Karin Johnson

Karin and Joseph have been married for 42 years with four kids and six grandchildren. Karin was a gymnastics coach for 25 years with a passion to help young people achieve their goals through structure and hard work. Her love for the kids made her very successful in developing very competitive teams.

Responding to a conviction that the next generation of leaders needs to understand how to use the bible as their guide, Karin began teaching a weekly millennial generation bible study over 15 years ago which still continues today.

Using her gifts of teaching and mercy, Karin has counseled women and struggling marriages for many years after experiencing many challenges in her own family from marriage struggles to family member addiction, recovery, and incarceration.

Stable housing simply means that you must have enough housing stability to know that you’ll have a roof over your head each night. The following housing situations would be considered stable: Owning your living space, renting a living space, living with friends, living with family, couch surfing, living in a hotel/AirBnB, and similar. The following housing situations would NOT be considered stable: Homeless, living in a shelter, living in your car.

If you are accepted to Change Course you acknowledge that this acceptance is conditional on you having a clean drug test when tested and being drug-free (including THC) for the entire length of the program. Are you willing and able to commit to this?*
